The end for nightscape photography?
In this episode of the photography vlog I discuss why I've been relatively quiet for the last couple of months, and the implications of what's coming up for me ad my family this year. Spoiler alert: I'm moving to South Africa. And we're having another baby. Implications on my photography are huge... But don't just read about it here, watch the video! Some of you might have noticed that I'd mentioned I was moving to New Delhi, India, in my 2018 roundup video. This was part of

Night time cityscape photography in London
My latest night photography vlog is a two-parter from London. Whilst I was down there on other business, I just had to spend some time taking photos at night, and spent a couple of nights walking around (sightseeing - yep, I'd never been before!) and making the most of the awesome and iconic London photography locations available. Part one: Part two: I was under no illusions that I would capture a truly original image shooting in such a popular place, but - particularly in pa

Bored of photography | Is photography oversaturated?
No actual photography in this vlog, just some stream-of-conscious thoughts on photography. I think everybody would agree that photography is a crowded place, with every man and his dog owning a phone with a half-decent camera, and DSLRs being very affordable. I've been bored and generally a bit disheartened with everything popping up on my social media feeds and YouTube recently. Vlogs too; that's an area that's grown drastically in the last 6 to 9 months. So much so that I'v

Astro landscape photography in The Peak District
In this episode of the vlog I do some location scouting in The Burbage Valley while looking for a particular spot. Local artist and photographer Ladoza inspired me with an Instagram post of his showing a rock formation full of water with Higger Tor in the background at sunrise. I thought this would make a great nightscape composition so set out to find the exact spot... I'll leave the vlog to explain the rest of it. Needless to say, I got wet. Here are the images I took that

One year on YouTube - 5 things I've learned
I've been recording videos for my photography vlog for a year now and have learned a lot along the way! Here are my top five things that I've learned vlogging for the last 12 months. YouTube is hard work! I've certainly learned that! 1. Firstly there's a lot more to making a video than just taking a GoPro along on a shoot - which is how I imagined it would be in the beginning. You need to consider the sound, the b-roll and context of what you're filming, and then there's the

YouTube channel trailer
I finally managed to put together a trailer for my YouTube Channel. I'd been struggling with the pacing and actually putting the appropriate content together and just couldn't produce anything that I was happy with. After about a year I've finally produced one I'm happy with though! Have a look and let me know what you think! #astrophotographytips #nightscapephotography #sheffieldphotographer #youtube #photographyvlog

Astrophotography seascapes & wildlife photography at night...
I travelled to Saltburn-by-the-Sea on the North Yorkshire coast for some astrophotography and seascape photography in this episode of the vlog. The beach and particularly Saltburn pier are great locations for photographing the stars and I was really pleased with what I came away with. Check out the vlog here: One of my favourite images from the shoot, and actually one of my favourite photographs from 2017 is this one looking down the pier: But also looking back down the pier

Astrophotography / night time landscape photography - Guisborough, North York Moors
In this photography vlog astrophotography (or just landscape photography at night...) was my aim as I travelled back to my home town of Guisborough on the edge of the North York Moors. I met up with a couple of old friends from school and we camped out in Guisborough woods. This is probably my favourite vlog so far - really had a great night and am actually super happy with the images I captured. I even caught what I believe was an early Perseid meteor in the final image! Be

Not a wedding photography vlog...
To cut a long story short, half way through making this episode I had a slight identity crisis and decided that as far as my vlogging / YouTube channel goes, I'm only going to focus on the landscape/nightscape/urban photography that I do. And also see if I can work out what it is that I actually do... There is some urban nightscape photography in this vlog eventually! I'd filmed a few different things whilst shooting events and weddings, meeting wedding clients etc, and was e

RODE Videomicro unboxing and real world review
For my latest YouTube video I unbox and roadtest the Rode Videomicro, one of Rode's great, and powerful, microphones for cameras, vlogging and generally recording sound. Right out of the box I was impressed with the build quality - I was expecting this thing to be plastic but it actually feels like aluminium maybe, it's got a nice weight to it and feels really solid. The Videomicro comes with a windscreen (or deadcat) and their Rycote® Lyre® shock mount. It's basically a grea
